In Karnataka survey was carried out during different periods which are as follows:

  • 1.Original Survey was carried out between 1863 to 1890. All the documents prepared during original survey are in modi marathi language.
  • 2. Re-survey was carried out between 1900 to1920
  • 3. Hissa survey was carried out between 1926 to 1940.
  • 4. Second Re-classification was carried out between 1955 to 196

Brief description of the various records prepared and maintained during the various surveys is mentioned below

Tippan Book (Original)

Tippan is a basic survey document prepared in the field while doing survey. It is a document which contains field measurements parcel wise. The map is hand-drawn and not to scale.

Pakka book (Original)

This is an area calculation book. The measurements recorded in tippan are the source for calculating the area. The area of a parcel is obtained from this book.

Prathi book (Original)

This is record containing the fertility of the soil - Percentage value of land. It also contains the details of uncultivable portion - kharab within the parcel and its area. Based on these details the assessment - land tax is fixed for each parcel.

Akarbandh

This is a settlement register containing parcel wise land tax fixed for each parcel. It is register containing numerical data like cultivable and uncultivable, within uncultivable public purpose land portion of land used for dry, wet and plantation of crops etc. This is a register which gives final area of each parcel but also for the village.

This is a document prepared once again when resurvey was conducted between 1900-1920 and a similar document like Tippan Book (Original)

Pakka book (Re-survey )

This is a document prepared once again when resurvey was conducted between 1900-1920 and a similar document like Pakka Book (Original)

Prathi book (Re-survey )

This is a document prepared once again when resurvey was conducted between 1900-1920 and a similar document like Prathi Book(Original)

Hissa survey tippan

This is document prepared during hissa survey operation undertaken during 1926 - 1940. This also is tippan book where sub-divisions are formed within a parcel due to partition/sale. This is similar to Tippan Book.

Hissa survey pakka

This is a scale drwan sketch having sub-divisions a within a parcel and its measurements and area of each sub-division. This is similar to pakka book.

Prathi Book ( Second Reclassification)

This is a register prepared during reclassification of parcles taken up during 1960's. This book contains details of a parcel if there are changes in the cultivable and non cultivable area compared to its re-survey status. This also contains details if there are changes in the crop pattern.

Village maps

This is an indicative map drawn in the scale of 1:20.It contains all major features of the village which will help in identifying the parcels and major land features in a village.

Traverse Index Map and Traverse Book including lines

These are prepared during Survey of building sites within the limits of village. Town or city is surveyed by Deputy Commissioner or the survey officer under Section 148 using theodolite by traverse system for preparation of frame work for detailed survey work.

Original detailed map

After the preparation of Traverse Index Map and Traverse Book including lines building sites are surveyed and mapped by using plane table and the these records are prepared.

Area calculation book

After the preparation of Traverse Index Map and Traverse Book including lines building sites are surveyed and mapped by using plane table and the these records are prepared. This is a book in which the details of the area calculation of each property is indicated.

Local area Maps

This is an indicative map of an area, formed in a city. This is drawn in the scale of 1:2500.

P.T (Plane Table ) Sheets

The P.T. Sheets are the maps prepared in the field. The P.T. Sheets are drawn in the scale of 1:500. A local area is divided into blocks and each of these blocks is measured and mapped using Plane Table. The measurements of each property and buildings if any are indicated in the P.T. Sheet.

Enquiry registers

While deciding the ownership of a property the summary/abstract of the order of the Enquiry Officers recorded in this register. This register contains details such as area, tenure, name of the holder, details of ownership documents, date of issue of notice, persons present at the time of the survey and so on.

Field Books

The sketch of the property with measurements is indicated in this book. Apart from this the block name; road/street name; P.T. Sheet No.; Provisional City survey number; Corporation No.; Ward No.; Final City survey number, name of the owner; Name of the tenant if any and easement details.

Demand register

This is a register maintained to collect the demands due from the property owners.This shows the calculation of the fees in respect of the properties. Once the property holder pays the fees a certificate for building sites and holdings called Sannad certificate is issued. The rate per mt2 and the total amount payable on the property, date of payment and date of issue of ‘Sannad certificate’ is indicated in this register.

Property card

This is the final product for the public - a document showing the ownership of the urban properties. It has details such as Division No.; Name of the area; P.T. Sheet No.; City survey No.; Area in mt2; tenure; assessment; easement details; name of the property holder; name of lessee; other encumbrances if any.

Register of encroachment

Register of encroachment contains mainly the area and description of encroachment and city survey number on which the encroachment is made.
